Fiber Internet
Most modern fiber is “fiber to the home,” which means the glass strand runs all the way to your house and connects to a small device called an optical network terminal (ONT). The ONT converts the light signal into the connection your router uses. Some older networks marketed as fiber only run glass partway and switch to copper for the final stretch, which limits the speeds you actually receive. True fiber to the home avoids that bottleneck.
Cable Internet
Cable Internet sends information as electrical signals through copper coaxial cable, the same kind of line that originally carried television into homes. Cable uses a standard called DOCSIS to move Internet data over its existing TV infrastructure. It works, and in many areas it can deliver strong download speeds, but it also carries some built-in limitations. Electrical signals lose strength over distance and are more vulnerable to interference, and the network in your neighborhood is shared among many homes at once.

Latency is the short delay between clicking something and getting a response, often measured as “ping.” Fiber has lower latency than cable, frequently in the single digits to low tens of milliseconds. Lower latency means smoother video calls, more responsive online gaming where split-second timing matters, and fewer “waiting” moments when a page loads. For competitive gamers and anyone on frequent video meetings, this difference is noticeable.
Consistency (even during peak hours). Remember, cable shares capacity across an area, so its performance is most likely to slip when everyone else in the neighborhood is also using the Internet. Fiber’s capacity to each home means your speed in the evening looks much like your speed at midday.

More connected devices, higher-resolution streaming, larger cloud backups, and more people working from home all push bandwidth needs upward every year. Fiber has enormous headroom; the same glass line in the ground can carry far higher speeds as a provider upgrades the equipment on each end. Cable’s copper infrastructure has a lower ceiling.
